I Am Still Learning
How many of you have ever been to a flag retirement ceremony? To be totally honest, until this evening, I did not even know this ceremony existed. This is a very reverent ceremony conducted by the Boy Scouts of America. It teaches you the proper way to dispose of a flag that has become tattered by weather. It also reminds you about the history of our country and inspires pride as you are reminded about what it means to be free. It was very impressive to watch these young boys handle the flag with such dignity. I did not know there is an established flag code that dictates the proper retirement of a flag. It is carefully cut into five pieces, then folded and placed in a fire. Thank you Boy Scouts of America for preserving this tradition and sharing it with our community. I cannot imagine how it felt to live so many years ago when this country was founded or how it felt to struggle during the divisive Civil War...but seeing this ceremony makes me so thankful for all of those who fought to make this country what it is today. Especially on this anniversary of 9/11. We thank you military personnel, firefighters, police officers, first responders, and volunteers.
