Our Family Trees

This was our art project from last week.  It took us all week to complete it but it is totally child created.  All of the trees are so beautiful.  Stop by our classroom and take a peek.  What a beautiful way to welcome fall and celebrate Johnny Appleseed.

Johnny Applesseed Day

We started our Johnny Appleseed festivities with a "blind" taste test.  The apples were peeled and cut on paper plates... looking pretty much exactly alike.  So as each child entered our room, they tasted a piece from each plate labeled with the numbers 1-3 and voted...  What an interesting concept?  They came to the table telling me they only like the red apples... and guess what... number 3 was the column for the yellow apples.  We did the big reveal during circle and learned that column 1 was red delicious and column 2 was granny smith... So shout out to the Golden Delicious... this year's class favorite.

Later we learned about Johnny Appleseed and his LOVE of all varieties.  We made these cute little hats to remind us that he walked all over this beautiful country sharing apples wherever he went. Johnny Appleseed had to walk and carry all of his belongings.. so this hat is to remind us that he used his pot as a hat.  (Well and he probably used it to make delicious applesauce too.)

It was our very first visit from the book mobile!!! Yes... it was super sunny when I took this picture... but I just had tooo.  Books are so awesome!  There are all kinds ... about all kinds of things... AND they make our brains grow!  Thank you Lexington Public Library for stopping by today!!!

Friends & Families Make Life Fun

Our letter this week was the letter L.... and we spent our week talking about friends, feelings and families.... and of course.... LOVE!  So above you see one of our friend's books about our family....It is hard for our boys and girls to understand the importance of all of those around us... but we are learning that as we grow and get older... we can be more independent...but we also see that we need all of those around us!!! We spend a lot of time talking about the changes that happened as we grew from a baby into a smart, strong four year old student.  So, the hard part now is to see how we fit into the world around us.  We have families and friends to help us in all that we do and to make life so much for fun!!! Of course we don't always like the same things... and that's were sharing, kindness and acceptance come into play.  (That's crazy hard for us as adults too.)  You can see from the pictures below that we are learning to play with each other... friends old and new to us this year. We are also learning that when we mess up.... it is totally okay... we all have those days... BUT... we can say "I'm sorry."  Friends mess up and friends forgive.
So to help us remember that we care for each other - just like God cares for each of us... we got a "prayer pocket" to take home.  This is a small turtle pillow with a message that says "God Cares."  There is a pocket on the tummy that contains each child's name and a message that reminds us to take one card out each night to pray for this friend.
When the cards are all out... they can go right back in and our prayers can start all over.   It is amazing how much God loves each one of us... no matter what we do or say.  This little turtle reminds us to remember that each friend is special in their own way.

Friendship Cake

Having friends makes the world so much sweeter and brighter!!! Friends share and work together... and that is exactly what we did when we made our friendship cake.... First we read the box recipe and mixed up the batter.  Then each child got a cup of batter and we added a drop of their favorite color....
The next step was pouring each cup of batter into the pan and then swirling it all together....
SEE!!!!  This cake looks so beautiful.... and this is just before Mrs. Kelli put in the oven...

After our cake was thoroughly baked and cooled.... we added some creamy white frosting and then each child added some colorful sprinkles... As you see below... this cake was super yummy!!!

Each child's batter mixed with the others and we ended up with this rainbow cake prepared by everyone ... working together.
I'm not sure if this cake was so yummy because ... well, it is cake... OR was it so yummy because we did it together.  Whatever the reason... here we are... our sweet little class family of friends.  We are a rainbow and that's what makes us the perfect class family.
