Isn't it amazing how a child's mind works? They are always trying to figure things out and understand the world around them. They ask questions about what is relevant and what is totally unexpected. Well - this is how we all learn. Usually we find something out and then tell our friends, "did you know...." So this friend was curious about a coconut. He asked his mom about them and she bought one for him to "explore." He held it, looked at it and then they cracked it open. Then he brought it in to share with our class. How fun!!!! Everyone loved it. He told everyone that coconuts fall off of palm trees and that when you crack it open sweet milk comes out but that the coconut inside isn't really good. What a learning experience? He passed it around (in the bag) and the children were able to feel that a real coconut is heavy and kind of furry looking. They also observed that the shell fit together like a puzzle. It was really cool and it was the best kind of learning - from a friend. I'd be willing to be bet that this is something they will remember...fun things I learned about a coconut.
