Today we learned about Cinco de Mayo and incorporated this into our farm unit. (I honestly didn't plan this.) We had fun trying on a sombrero and learned that cowboys in Mexico are called "gauchos." We talked about the practicality of this fancy sombrero and were able to identify reasons why a traditional cowboy hat is more suited for working in a field all day. It also helped us understand the difference between a farm and a ranch and why cowboys are needed to work on a ranch. You never know where a topic might lead and how it intercepts our unit for the week - so many times our learning is enhanced even more by the questions we ask in our circle time. It was lots of fun to to share our thoughts about this festive holiday and do some cultural comparison with the farm unit. I can't imagine what the children took from this conversation and shared at home.
