Old MacDonald Had A Farm....

This week we are learning about farms. We started the week making our barn folder to keep all of our learning materials in. We love our learning folders and ask daily if "we are taking these home today." The folders keep all of our related worksheets and projects together. It helps everything make sense and lets the children review some of their favorite activities. This week have been practicing writing words and reviewing all of "kindergarten skills." I have been so impressed with our writing skills and overall ability to comprehend some fairly difficult concepts. When you see your child's work it is their own. Mrs. Julie and I help but do not complete assignments - be very proud of these very hard working children. They are so very smart.
We also made a silly cow and learned that cows are friendly animals. They are usually a friend to the farmer and give us dairy products like milk, cheese and ice cream. (Bulls are not no so nice boy cows. We didn't give a lot of detail about this - just lots of warnings to never touch a cow unless the farmer gives permission.)
Tuesday was our "pig day." We learned about pigs, their habitat, diet - and read "The Three Little Pigs." We made this really cool story prop with all three houses a pig and a big, bad, wolf. It was so much fun to practice huffing & puffing, but it was good news to hear that the pigs were friendly and didn't really hurt the wolf. (a slight alteration of the true fairy tale.) Be sure to ask your child to tell you about another book we read titled "Pigsty." It should influence their cleaning habits in their room. Nobody wants a room so dirty that pigs want to live there.
As an important amendment to this unit - it totally reinforces everything that we learned about Earth Day. The children fully understand why it is so important to take care of God's creation - because without it we really don't have much of anything. I apologize if they are driving you crazy at home - but they are such wonderful stewards of the Earth.
