The Fire Truck Is Coming
Although October is Fire Safety month, the fire truck is just now getting to our preschool. (They are so busy making visits to all of the local schools.) Talking about fire safety can be a little bit scary, so don't be surprised if your child brings this up at home. In the next few weeks, we will have a fire drill in our classroom. Because we learn how to exit our building and practice this, we also talk about home safety plans. Your child may even ask you to practice a fire drill at your house. The "Fire Truck Visit" is always an important visit for the children in our classroom. We do talk about not playing with matches, candles, fires - but no matter how gentle the conversation, it is always scary. When I was a student in high school, my family home was destroyed by a fire caused by an electrical outlet. I always incorporate this into our talks about fire safety and why it is so important to leave these types of things to an adult. It is a curious thing to plug something in and unplug it. This is one of those subjects that we want to protect our children from, but it is so important for their personal safety. Take some time to talk to your child about staying safe at home. You can even give them a safety job or ask them to help plan your own family fire safety program.
