Sinterklaas Day

It was Sinterklaas Day and I am pretty sure that you have never heard of this.  His visit was part of our unit on Christmas around the world and he is from Holland.  He is their "Santa Claus" and he visits boys and girls to leave treats in their shoes.  He travels around with a helper named, "Black Pete" and they travel on horseback.  Children traditionally leave hay for the horse in their shoes to help the horse with his long journey to visit all of the children.  So hearing this, I can only imagine what information came home to you.  There is always more detail to learn, but it is Christmas and we can only remember so much!!  So here we are practicing for the Christmas program in our bare feet.  Yes, no shoes, but this was the most hilarious thing the children have ever done.  They couldn't stop giggling.

We walked back to our classroom to find this!!!  Treat bags in our shoes.  Sinterklaas did find our tiny preschool and some three year old teachers even heard the horse's bells ringing as he stopped by.  Each child had a little bag of goodies and couldn't wait to get home to see what was inside.  We also made a cute little paper shoe with a sprig of hay to remind us that children around the world celebrate Christmas in many different ways, but that Santa (no matter what he looks like)  loves us all!!!!!  Happy Sinterklaas Day!
