Voting? At Preschool?

Oh yes, we vote at our preschool.  We first practice with some simple group voting - like which is best - ice cream or cupcakes...then tackled the big stuff.  We made some voter identification cards to help us practice our phone number and birthdays....
then we went to the "polling precinct."  (I know it is a table behind the puppet theater with picture check boxes....)

We then made our choice for Governor of South Carolina based on photos alone.  We even used an "old fashioned quill" pen and  a super "low tech" paper ballot.  When we were done, we folded our paper and put it in the secret voting box.  After both four year old classes voted, the voting box was taken to Mrs. Denise and she counted them all up.
As you can see, Vincent Sheheen won our 2014 Pilgrim Preschool Election.  Not scientific in any way, but a really fun way to introduce the "voting" process.  Don't be surprised if your child asks to tag along to see what the real thing looks like and don't be surprised if they ask for the "I Voted" sticker.  It is pretty neat to practice an adult thing like this at the preschool and it is also pretty neat to hear all of the things the children have overheard about candidates on tv and how they make sense of it in their minds.  Who knows - one of these beautiful faces might grow up to be our Governor or President some day?  Oh and don't forget there is no preschool tomorrow.  Pilgrim Lutheran Church is an actual precinct so there will be lots of activity with the real election.  (Wonder if our little pilgrims predicted the outcome?)
