Sushi Day

It was "Sushi Day."  I know that you have been hearing about this for a while and probably didn't believe us when we said that we were doing this - BUT here it is.  We really did make sushi today.  Now not all of us tried it, but we all helped prepare it.
Bonnie Sensie set everything up and worked with pairs to show everyone how this is put together.  I am pretty sure that all of the ingredients viewed separately looked great but some us weren't so sure about the finished product.
First we washed our hands - then we helped pat the rice on the seaweed....

Then we added toppings.  There were carrots, cucumbers and sliced crab.  Here is one of our helpers holding up the finished product.

Many thanks to our "sous chefs" who helped with all of the preparations. And many thanks also to Bonnie Sensei for putting this together.  She comes each week to share her love of the Japanese culture and to share the language with us.
This is the finished sushi, rolled and sliced.  We ate around the Japanese flag and enjoyed some green tea.  (Okay - we tasted the green tea....Okay, some of us just looked at the green tea.)

Above are some of our friends who really loved the sushi.  They were not afraid to try something new.  I was super proud of everyone in our class for using their best manners.  The sushi looks a little strange and we all did our best with this new experience.  Of course, we really enjoyed the sweet treat provided by Bonnie Sensie.  These little "cookie sticks," along with some Japanese gummies were shared as a "dessert."  I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said this was their least favorite part because it was.  Learning about other cultures takes a lot of time and we had fun today learning about foods from Japan.

Many thanks again to those that helped and especially Bonnie Sensei.  She is not in a group picture because it got a little crazy, but I will make sure to post one later.
